Castleton Tower Adventure

Full-Day Castleton Tower Adventure

Located 40 minutes Northeast of Moab, Utah, Castleton Tower is a iconic climbing destination that was first climbed in 1961. This freestanding tower is a must-do for intermediate and advanced climbers, with its unique blend of stunning views, exposure, and fun climbing. There are two guided options for climbing to the top of Castleton Tower, both within the 5.8-5.9 range. Both climbs are approximately 400 feet tall and consist of 4 pitches.

Kor-Ingalls Route

First established in September 1961, this iconic route has become a staple of Castleton Tower's climbing scene. Spanning four pitches, the route is a delightful blend of chimney and hand crack climbing, with a mix of 5.6 to 5.8 difficulties. The highlight of the climb is the third pitch, which features a short but challenging section of 5.9+ climbing. This section requires some technical lie-backing or chicken-winging, but fear not - for those who prefer a more relaxed ascent, a bolt can be used to aid the crux move. Overall, the route is a great introduction to Tower climbing and highly recommended as climber's first desert tower route.

North Chimney Route

First established in 1970, this four pitch route is a must-try for climbers seeking a unique blend of hand crack and chimney climbing. The adventure begins with traditional Indian Creek-style handcracks, setting the tone for an exciting ascent. As you reach the second pitch, the route takes a dramatic turn, morphing into a unique chimney climbing experience all the way to the top of the third pitch. The climb gradually eases up in intensity as you make your way through the chimney. Once you arrive at the Notch, we'll take a break and prepare for the final push. The fourth pitch is a thrilling conclusion to the climb, featuring fun and exposed 5.7 terrain that will keep your heart racing until you reach the summit.

Choosing the Right Route For You

Kor-Ingalls:

  • Technically rated harder, but with less sustained climbing, requiring less endurance and strength

  • Full sun, making it better for cloudy or cool days in the summer or sunny days in the winter

  • More ledgy climbing with sporadic sections of technical climbing

  • Only one small section of quality handcrack

  • Mostly tight chimney climbing

North Chimney:

  • Technically rated easier, but more sustained and requires more endurance and strength

  • Shaded, perfect for hot and sunny days

  • Can be a bit more crowded with people

  • Features a long pitch of Indian Creek-style handcrack

  • Chimneys are relatively wide, with finger and handcracks within, requiring less actual chimneying

  • May take a bit longer for new climbers on average

The Summit

Once you reach the top of the tower, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Castle Valley, the Colorado River, and the La Sal Mountains.
